Mr Pennine Bodybuilding Competition 2016

Martin returns to photograph this year’s display of muscle prowess

Last year, Martin was invited to photograph the Mr Pennine Bodybuilding Competition. With no competition running for 25 years, Michael Coupe, a local gym owner, brought the competition back in 2014. Michael has since passed, but the competition organisers continued with the event in 2015 in his name, with Margeret Duckworth at the helm.

Held at Pendle Hippodrome, the event is known for its inclusion of both men and women of all ages, with Michael Coupe always so supportive of the IBFA, and encouraging newcomers. As such, there are categories for all levels, including ‘Juniors’ and ‘Over 50s’, as well as the standard ‘Novice’ and ‘Masters’, giving all types of bodybuilders the chance to show off their muscles.

The Mr Pennine Bodybuilding Competition also opens up opportunities for greater exposure and bigger titles, notably entry in to the IBFA Mr and Miss Britain competition, which could then, in turn, lead to the World Championships.

Martin was invited along to capture and document last year’s event with some professional flare that would enhance the aesthetic and provide both the event organisers, and competing bodybuilders with a portfolio of bold, striking imagery, of which the organisers could use in their post-competition marketing, and competitors could use in their ‘artillery’.

Thrilled with the quality of Martin’s work in 2015, with great feedback coming from both organisers as well as competitors themselves on the standard of the body shots that were taken of them – keen to keep the competition going, organisers have asked him along to this year’s event, to document the competition once more.

Since 2015’s competition was so successful, and provided such a fantastic opportunity to photograph a very unique and striking subject, Martin is excited to get back to the Mr Pennine Bodybuilding Competition in 2016. He can’t wait to create a fresh portfolio of memorable images, and showcase his vast skills and experience in on location and event photography.

One of the great things about photographing bodybuilders last year was the challenge to create images that captured the raw vigour and beauty of the bodybuilding culture, and the strong spirit and determination of the competitors, as well as the impressive atmosphere of the event itself. Martin’s approach last year was to put the bodybuilders completely in the limelight, emphasising their qualities, and ensuring his shots made them the centre of attention, which he will be looking to achieve again.

This combination of requirements really puts a photographer’s abilities to the test, and it’s this kind of pressure that really stimulates Martin to get his best shots.
